After The Fact

Submitted by nomore in Shoplifting

I have a good friend with bad anxiety and sometimes starts worrying about... well, anything. She started worrying about some old things in her past. About three years ago, she started going through a rough patch in life and started taking stuff from a large chain store but was never caught. It was never anything expensive, mostly just some food/snacks and a few sweaters, so probably anywhere between $20 - $50 each time, sometimes going once a week or not going for several weeks.

However, after a few months of hitting this place (and somewhere else, also just for food), she stopped completely and never went back. According to her, she was never approached or stopped by LP. She stopped lifting because she felt bad. Lately though, she's been wondering how she got so lucky with getting away and then started panicking about the store filing police reports after she stopped and that they're still looking for her or issued a warrant.

I started googling around just to get an insight to this to try and calm her down. Everything I've read seems to indicate that if they wanted to stop her or could have, they would have done so already at the store. And that LP care more about heavy lifters, not someone taking groceries or some clothes. Is this true? Do you think she has anything to worry about? I told her to find a lawyer to check if she's that worried but she can't afford one.

You can see if you have warrants by going to your local PD website.

they cant have warrants if they cant identify the person.

I was just suggesting that the friend run their name to ease their mind.

another thing is she wasnt even caught by the police or lp, which wouldve taken down her name and such. She should not steal right now if she is this paranoid, since its been 3 years, unlikely anyone recognizes her at the store, if its even the same people working there.

Tell her not to worry, but I wouldn't suggest she do any more lifting if she is that worried about things....

If this stuff happened three years ago there is no way anyone is coming after her for anything..

Most of the time, they are going to be looking for people who are lifting thousands of dollars worth of merch...

Let your friend know she has nothing to worry about :)

Thanks for the quick reply :)

She has not lifted in years so thankfully that's one less thing to worry about for her. There's probably no one actively searching for her... but she says she's worried about a possible warrant existing. Do you think she should worry about that, or is the amount too little that they probably didn't care to follow up once she stopped going back (assuming they even noticed her to begin with..)?

theres no possible way she has a warrant, she would have to be arrested, or had a cop give her a charge, like a fine she never paid, that my a result in a warrant. They dont even know who she is, as they never identified her, or even noticed that she stole anything. If she is worrying about this all the time, its extremely ill-advised for her steal again, since she only done in a time of desperation, not like a habitual thing like us on this forum.
