Why do you guys care so much about sensors/tags?

Submitted by XefLP in Shoplifting

Hey all, LP here, was just curious as to why you guys take so much time removing tags and sensors. As an LP, we never make stops or even care when the EAS towers go off. Just wondering, also I’ll answer any questions you guys have over PMs even company specific stuff.

I went to a store where I bought everything. The towers went off anyway. The lady rescanned my items then grabbed my bag out of my hands and walked through the sensors, then made me walk through the sensors. Didn't steal anything but since I didn't know my so called rights I just went with it. Now I would tell her hey you can't do that unless you saw me conceal something... if it's the same in Klanada. The other time I was at a liquor store and the LP kept staring at me the whole time. It was making me really uncomfortable and I did not plan to steal. I kept walking around because I'm really indecisive and he was making me uncomfortable so I couldn't think.. then he asked me really loudly across the store "Can I help you?" in a really aggressive voice. I was really embarrassed. I said no just looking. But he walked up to me and demanded to know what I was looking for. I didn't know what to say so I just said a fruity drink low in sugar... then he called over a sales person really loudly and the whole thing was in a really demeaning aggressive attitude... and everything he was saying he was saying so loudly so everyone could hear and everyone was staring at me.. so yeah I basically care about alarms because i have been publically humiliated as a result of alarms/ LPs/ do gooder workers

You should report that. When I did lp I would never embarrass a customer in that manner.

I personally do it because, while you may not be able to apprehend us just for the alarm, it is extremely sketchy and I will only be watched closer the next time I come in. If I walk in and don't beep then walk out and don't beep I look like a regular customer, where as if I walk in and don't beep and walk out and beep that is very strange. The towers aren't useless, but still have a use.

There's also the risk of, if I walk in and don't beep but walk out and beep, they're likely to check the footage because, let's be real, that's strange.

I've been to some stores where they do pay attention to the towers. If you don't know whether or not the store you're at is one of those or not, it's best not to risk potentially setting them off.

They can’t physically detain you tho. Only ask you to stop for that

If they tried to get physical and I know I wasn’t concealing on cam. I’d even defend myself. Pepper spray probably.

the only ones that dont do care about tags, are the one doing Walkouts, those are more brazen lifters. most of us shoplift and want to be unnoticed, and a eas tower sound is more than likely going to attrack attention to yourself, and in the future as well. its the same thing as concealing in plain sight of camera, or an lp.

Hey what do you think is the safest method of theft? I did lp too and I hide things in blind spots and steal it the next day. But I want other opinions.

Honestly if you were dressed completely appropriate for the weather, didn’t leave behind any trail and only took a small amount of items every time I doubt I would ever even notice you. I think it’s more about if we notice you being sus not if we see you conceal/quick selecting. I guarantee there’s at least 5 people a day that are taking one cosmetics item from me that I’ve never even watched. However if I’m watching you and you have merch and are walking towards a blind spot, I’m gonna get off my ass and go check the area

That’s why I stage in blind spots. So when I come in to steal they cant even get selection on me because it’s all in the blind spot. It also has to be in a spot where you can’t really follow on foot without being seen. I hide things under the bottom shelf, I’ve left things hidden for weeks at a time even.

Ahhh I see I didn’t see the staging part. Very smart of you as most places wouldn’t be able to do anything even if they saw it. Best most can do is record as much as they can and ask corporate for permission to ban you from the store essentially

1

Drshoplifter wrote

That happened once. But they actually saw me remove it from its hiding place in that case and I was about to put it in my bag when I saw a camera rotate to look at me. I thought it couldn’t move because it’s always in the same position.

What about breaking into display cases and staging the merch? At my store we could only ban. According to the law, since nothing was stolen, there is no burglary.

XefLP wrote

At my store if you started to break into the cases, we could apprehend you on damages. It’s also about the intent to commit the crime so if we have enough to prove you had intent to commit burglary/robbery and we were there to stop you then t could go either way.

Some of us don’t care about tags. However we like to be safe. And draw as little attention as possible

OK, then - when does LP leave for the night at Walmart?

I don't like the possibility of the towers going off and having any eyes on me when I leave, because a) I don't like the attention and b) I don't know if or when LP will go back and look at cameras after seeing me leave sending the gates ringing.
