What do I do if alarms go off?

Submitted by thief in Shoplifting

Title. I've been doing this for a while, but I've never had any alarms go off. Do I just run? Probably not, but seeing my personality there's no way I'm going back into the store once the scanners get me.

I think from what I've read I just keep walking but if they try to get me back just boost. This right?

just keep walking and ignore. when i was in lp at walmart, if anyone tried to physically detain you just because of the alarm, they'd be fired. Either lp, or management, needs to be 100% certain that you have stolen merchandise as you leave in order to stop you. When I was there management couldn't make apprehensions, but i think they changed it to where they can now.

Edit: the door greeter will shout, sir, sir, but just keep walking. Lp wont bother you. If management is there they may run up to you and ask what you have but they wont put their hands on you.

Alright thanks. But this store is one that's not a Walmart that I will avoid saying to protect myself, it's a store in my mall with scanners at the entrance. There's like a 6 foot gap between the scanner and the walls on each side. Will the scanners detect me from that far away if I walk at the far end of this gap?

Not with just a standard security tag. with a hard tag or spider wrap it will. just wrap the product in tin foil. this works even with just one layer. with any tag.

I can also tell you that most stores will not allow an apprehension just for the door alarm. Its a big no no. that would be like stopping someone just for looking suspicious.

Edit: in most states they need proof to stop you legally. Or an overt action. Like concealing merchandise or ripping the tag off. It isn't legal for the store to stop you for the alarm.

usually its company policy whether they will apprehend, or stop your or not. This is for target though, if you activate the beeper, and you stole something, quickly do a powerwalk, or run, only chance. if its in a mall entrance, its even better, you can disappear in the mall, and its piratically difficult to catch you at all. never go near the entrance when they are kids, they tend to alert other people loudly.

You have a few options Walking calmly and ignoring it... Ditch your stuff in the store at the door (that way theres no crime) If they are coming after you you can run... Most stores have a no chase policy but watch out for that employee thats trying to be the hero.

Once you pass the gate its a crime. However when i was in lp, if you dumped the goods i would let you run.

Oops meant before the gate if it beeps. Then is it a crime ?

yes. most store policies state that once you pass the security gate its game on. so in the gate as it beeps. its a crime and theyll get you. id keep walking. If a real lp guy comes after you then that means he observed you conceal, and hes not stopping you because of the alarm.

What about the cash registers? I read somewhere that the cash registers are considered the “point of sale” so if you pass it it means you’ve stolen something.

If that’s not the case you’re technically not stealing if you go to the in-store McDonalds with merchandise in your bag, is it?

You could get arrested but I can’t think of a single store whose policy would allow it. And it would be really easy to fight in court.

I try to buy something whenever I steal, so that I can just lift the shopping bag up and shrug like "You guys obviously didn't deactivate the thing properly" as I keep walking

This is a good tactic, but a bad one if you're being careless. If you were caught on camera or spotted concealing then it just gives you more time to be caught and searched
