Dude, the library?! The one place in society that allows everyone, irrespective of socioeconomic status, access to knowledge? The first step to the democratisation of knowledge? The first step to lifelong learning?

No way.

I am 100% up for civil disobedience, but praxis has to be targeted. The only people you're affecting here are people who can't afford to buy books and that's totally the wrong target.

wow wouldnt it be great if there was a way for you to read free books while not screwing over anyone and also not breaking the law. you know libraries dont charge you money rite

Libraries are difficult to lift from discreetly because they have that little magnetic card inside the binding that you probably won't be able to remove without damaging the book (i tried before, the guilt haunts me still).

Your library might have a bookstore on the inside: a place near the front where they sell donated books or old books for dirt cheap. Those books generally don't have tags in them. So pick them up, sit down with them at a table, then after a while put them in your bag and walk out.

There's really no reason to be nervous in a library. Librarians don't give a shit. Even if you fill your bag with books and walk out making the alarms go off it's not like they'll do anything about it.

I don't want to sound moralizing but you can just read the book in the library. you can't just hang out in the library all day? Also, I've applied for library cards while homeless, they usually just want a picture i.d. it takes a couple minutes.

The one way you can lift a book out of a library is if that library has some type of side entrance no one is watching. Sometimes there's no magnetic detector thing on the door, or there is space on the side you can slip a bookbag through so as not to set off the alarm.

But yeah, really no reason to be nervous, there's no way for the librarian to know if a book you are carrying is checked out or if you came in with it or not and they really don't watch people like that.

Library gets thier books from donations, so they dont have an inventory. They often have to chase people for unreturned book, so its somewhat worst than a mom and pop shop. Just get a library card and borrow it. you can always renew it.

That might be true of some Libraries, but everywhere i've been they get so many thousands of dollars a year to order new books. Usually it's fucked up how the city alocates funds so a Library in the white side of town will get more while the library in the poor/black/immigrant side of town has old books falling apart.

Kinda fucked up alot of libraries have recently instituted this algorythm where they throw out books that don't get checked out regularly and only order best sellers. Library in my home town was stuffing dumpsters full of books. Shits wild.

did not know this, i know my public library features some best sellers, if they are throwing it out as trash i guess people can get it for free. i guess it depends on the state, that is not red.

hanging out in the library on a sunny day isnt fun for me. perhaps if i catch the librarian on their lunch and ask -when they're not to busy- they'll consent to me walkin outside with an item
