Not a lawyer. This depends on jurisdiction. Some of the more restrictive laws say that theft begins when you (1) plan to steal (2) move an object or enable it to be moved. Removing spider wrap, in those jurisdictions, would be enough to prove both mens rea and actus reus.

Someone who wanted to steal something would need to ensure their safety from the moment they move the object onward.

using a s3 key is considered a felony burglary. I think it depend on the store, some store will charge you with vandalism/shoplifting, since you did kind of damage the product.
