It really isn’t suspicious. The person whose job it is to watch out for theft is usually preoccupied with other customers who need assistance, or they are busy on their phone or talking to a coworker. If you have a shopping cart, you can just place your bagged items in your cart. But I have gotten away with putting my bags on the floor in front of the self checkout. Make sure you press “skip bagging” when / if you scan one of the few items you’re actually paying for. Just act cool and calm when bagging non-scanned items.

You have to ensure you pick a self checkout register that is a distance away from the worker on duty. As I mentioned above take your time and try and wait till a worker is helping a customer before doing so. Also if you put a bag into the basket and/or carraige it makes it much easier to just swiftly move items into the bag. From my experience most workers assume you're bagging items you already paid for and will turn the other cheek.
