A time crystal or space-time crystal is a state of matter that repeats in time, as well as in space. Normal three-dimensional crystals have a repeating pattern in space, but remain unchanged as time passes. Time crystals repeat themselves in time as well, leading the crystal to change from moment to moment.

I am not a physicist, but "a repeating pattern in time" sounds this crystal structure changes over time but keeps returning to its initial state periodically in a predictable pattern, like a perfectly looping gif. This seems neat, and apparently somewhat unexpected, but it's maybe not as confusing as "time crystals" makes it sound.
