Am I the only one that gets annoyed with the "it's not a choice!" defense? I don't get why people want to give up all agency over sexual desire just to appease reactionaries. Chick-fil-A can fuck off whether it's a choice or not.

That argument probably has something to do with human rights law, right? Like in order for it to be analogous with gender discrimination it has to be biological or completely out of your control.

It justifies our existence as "normal" because if its natural and not a choice then we cant just not be gay, were as with a choice you can always just choose to not be gay and "fix" yourself :P

Yeah and it seems to come with the unspoken implication that if you could fix yourself, become normal, you would. Like the homophobes can only accept it if you at the same time disavow your desire as something you have been unwillingly burdened with.

"it's not a choice" implies heavily "it's a terrible affliction!"

very old argument for long ago times

I feel sort of the same way, so I prefer to avoid engaging with it. I feel like arguing that it isn't a choice is sort of conceding that homosexuality would be wrong if it were a choice, and I'm not into that.

As far the human rights bit, that's not quite it. Religion is also considered when determining things like refugee status, and many people would argue religion is a choice.
