I'd say PGP is an alternative to any end to end encryption that depends on code that it provided to you by a server.
When the encryption/decryption depends on a server, an admin could just inject their keys too, and then be able to read any future message you write.
I'm not aware of cases where that happened, but I wouldn't trust it to much.
If you use PGP, it will be compatible with any email service. If you're worried about IP logging: use Tor
