While psychologists have a horrendous history, but you can take from their work without taking everything.

I think you're missing the benefits of a diagnosis... and also about 20+ years of research into neurodiversity.

Firstly your statement just seems weird, of course people are going to make up words, if you don't have a word to define something, then you define one, if you start on this path, nothing is real.

In order to gather empirical evidence (I don't want any of that imperial evidence you're selling, sounds like another name for propoganda), people must first define something, also known as making shit up.

To see you point at psychology for lack of evidence is pretty funny given that for a very long time psychology dismissed social work theory (i.e. the lived experiences of women helping people in the community) due to not having an empirical base... Only to suddenly start having these breakthroughs when men brought these same theories up as the science of psychology.

By defining a condition, the approximate traits are identified so that similar people can be classified in order to build empirical evidence.

Narcissistic personality condition does not mean the same thing as how most people use the word narcissist. Narcissistic personality condition sounds fucked up.

I think there is something personal in your statement, that you don't want a diagnosis telling you or someone you know that they're disabled. But a diagnosis doesn't mean that something needs to be fixed, it provides a something to reflect upon, to improve understanding of the diagnosed person. Maybe it will fit, maybe it won't, but still a chance to grow. (Note, generally they need to be specifically specialised in the condition to provide a decent assessment)

In regards to links to genetics, maybe only one study on narcissism linked it to genetics, but also many studies linked other neurological conditions to genetics so many it's not a stretch to point to genetics when 9/10 related conditions also have links. Environmental and physical factors beyond genetics decide how the condition will effect a person's life, but if the genetic component isn't there, the other bits don't cause it.

“Which is really something bc I have at least some respect for naturopaths and chiropractors as having some good science”

Love to have the good science of chiropractic break an artery in my neck and give me a stroke
