If it was about quarantine and disease control, I might be more okay, but they just talked about maintaining profits.

Indeed, as much as I hate imports (since they hurt our farmers), it really needs to be done. We already import most of our garlic, how worse could it possibly be if we import white onions too? It doesn't even have to be permanent; if the government really cared about our farmers (they don't) they would be cracking down on the middlemen cartels keeping the prices high while buying from farmers at a very low price, giving more financial support to the farmers (could be by actually having the government buying from farmers at a reasonable price that wouldn't starve them), enact a badly needed genuine land reform, etc, etc.

Really, the reason why the government doesn't want to let in these white onions is not because they care about the farmers or even because they care about the "free market", but because they haven't gotten assurance of their kickback yet.

Meanwhile in the grocery white onions are priced at 700+ pesos per kilo, and the average price for just one piece of white onion is 130 pesos... You really can't blame people for smuggling in these onions that are in limited supply
