Most people can't seem to understand the difference between education and schooling, when it really couldn't be more clear. Education is intended as a practice of freedom, while schooling most often functions as a tool of oppression. Zakiyya Ismail does a brilliant job of distilling this in her talk.

It never ceases to amaze me just how difficult this is for some people to understand. How relentlessly they defend the idea that learning can only occur in schools. How they are convinced that socialization is not possible outside of this institution. How they assume it is contradictory for me to be a professor who unschools his children (school is compulsory, university is a choice... why is that so difficult to comprehend?). I want my children to learn, explore, and grow on their own terms in ways that break with colonialism and capitalism, not be molded in the design of a society that is so obviously sick and broken.

This was a good ass talk. It makes me super conflicted about my own participation in the university system. And especially as it regards whether or not one needs a terminal degree to do certain kinds of work.
