The last I looked, the pandemic death rate for people in their 50s in the US was 0.32%, or about 1 in 300. I lost a 58 year old family member who was otherwise in good health. The death rate for people in their 40s in the US was 0.1%, or 1 in 1000.

That's not ridiculous and a lot more than barely significant. Infect millions of people in their 40s and 50s, and hundreds of thousands will die.
