Agreed, I'd even say it's a problem for nuclear in general.
It's possible to swim in the pools in which they stock highly radioactive waste while they cool down, as long as you don't go closer than 10 cm to the crates of spent fuel at the bottom, the radioactive particles don't got much farther than that.
Imo, highly radioactive wastes should be glazed and dropped in oceanic subduction zones.
