‘Today, we have not had a referendum for self-determination in Catalonia.’

This is reaching 1984 levels.

‘We’ve always been at war with Eastasia.’

My favorite doublespeak was when the president of Madrid called the referendum an 'affront to democracy'.

Nothing says "democracy" like sending in police to curbstomp old people and steal bags of paper ballots.

Good for them. I wish people were like this in the U.S. every time police brutality happened. It’s hard being one of the few politically aware people.

How does Madrid even have control of the police? Why would they take orders from Madrid instead of Catalonia's president?

The local police have been facing off against national police in some places - Spain only have control of the ones they shipped in. MCAB :P
