Notable happenings that may have lead to this result:

  • murdoch controlling the vast majority of print and broadcast media giving him the power to swing a sizeable portion of the population

  • scare tactic campaigning by the LNP, boosted by the murdoch influence, causing people to believe falsehoods about the opposition parties

  • misleading election material at polling booths. There were several instances of misleading material being handed around, including but not limited to:

  1. fliers masquerading as other parties telling voters to use preferences other than what the party suggests

  2. posters made to look like electoral commision notices written in chinese (sizeable population in aus) with the message "the correct way to have your vote counted is to put the LNP first, and the put your preferences afterwards"

  3. at least once incidence of people masquerading as the greens party, handing out misleading vote fliers.

In conclusion, even with preferential runoff voting corruption and propaganda can influence the election severely, especially considering that all but #3 are considered legal in terms of australian campaign law; Polling results, betting websites, and mathematical analysis all showed a clear labor victory to be expected, and following my own bayesian analysis the chances of the results coming out the way the have were less than 3% when aggregating all other analysis sources.
