It's a pity I can't recommend any alternatives with Wayland. KDE is way too different in workflow, and if you're a GNOME person like me, it's not an option.

Keep looking at MATE and Budgie Desktop! They will probably be the first to implement Wayland. Ubuntu MATE plans to use Mir as a compositor for Wayland; and Ikey Doherty from Solus announced he is already preparing the environment for Wayland.

My complaints on GNOME are about performance. Sluggish animations. They said it would improve in 3.26. There are discussions about GNOME relying on a single thread to draw the mouse, the animations and many other things all together, which keeps it from using the computer resources properly. I don't use extensions, just plain stock GNOME.

EDIT: sway is an i3 alternative for Wayland. Highly experimental. You can try with Arch.
