Is Ubuntu even the number 1 distro any more? I thought Mint overtook it. I wish Manjaro would get more popular.

Could be number 1 in certain aspects/scenarios, but among the more adventurous LiGNUx users (distrohoppers, conky scripters, Openbox masters, curious people in general), it's certainly not the most loved. I've been seeing a lot of positive attention towards Arch and Solus lately.

Their stance on proprietary software confused me so I gave up on it.

That they refuse to include it in their repos?

You can get a lot of stuff via RPMFusion: https://rpmfusion.org/

To be fair, both Arch and Ubuntu also include proprietary firmware inside the kernel.

We hear about Arch more because Arch users love proselytizing

That's true. But also because Arch is very minimal. Any problems that might rise are often related to upstream development. Arch doesn't touch things and therefore is not guilty for bugs. You and the upstream developers are.

That's why it receives so many positive reviews. And they're not wrong. That's a major advantage of Arch.
