Yep I remember back in college everyone was laughing at some kid for asking how to do something in ubuntu. Everyone said get a real distro like Slackware Debian and gentoo...

At my school our Linux related classes started with downloading Ubuntu in a VM. They have been using it for a number of years too.

In college, I had to use Ubuntu 10.04 in a VM with less than 500MB alloted to it in an ancient system that was upgraded to windows 8. As of this year, it's still true. I once tried running puppy on one and even that ran slow.
