Got Final Notice Civil Demand from Target

Submitted by J9537 in Illegalism

Should I even bother paying it? Has anyone actually went to court for something like this? They want 400 dollars but honestly everywhere I look and research, people say to ignore it. Anyone that has been caught before at Target, do the letters stop? Also my mom found one of the letters through the mail while I was at school, but I just said it looks like a scam and she fell for it

I'm ignoring the one I got from another store. Everything I've read online says they're unenforceable.

Let me know how it goes for you when they stop for a long while.

Got caught shoplifting video games. Everything seemed perfectly planned until my gut told me to dump everything and leave. I wanted to resell the games so badly so I kept going, soon as I was going to walk out the exit, a plainclothes guy caught me. To be quite honest, I was ready to push him as hard as I can and run. But I didn't want the police to get involved so I didn't. Even the LP said he was a intimidated to confront me, because he said I look like a football player that can easily overpower him. But the more I think of it, I could have easily thrown him and throw all the products at him and run. Like my car was parked extremely far, so all I had to do was run and leave.

It's a rule: always trust your gut. If you have doubts, dump and leave. I'm sorry you got caught, but it's a very good thing you didn't get into any sort of a physical altercation with anyone. That would've really REALLY made things worse.

Always listen to your gut feeling. Also dont risk hurting someone. Always run but never fight.

If you want a record of your lifting on your credit report, ignore it.

I would honestly be okay with that. I don't even have a credit card to begin with, I'm too young to have one plus no job. Plus, I would assume they would need a judgment in order to place it on my credit report

Easy enough to get. Bill collectors do this all the time. Just keep in mind, we're talking about 7 years on your credit, which can make getting jobs or even apartments a challenge.

Good luck.

They don't need a judgement to place a statement of debt on your credit report.

If it does show up on your credit report... After Thanksgiving dispute it. Most places are understaffed and too busy to reply back in 30 days and if they do not it gets dropped off your report.

You know how everyone on the forum says don't mess with Target? Well same goes with the civil demand. Target will continue to go after the civil demand and eventually turn over to collections. Don't pay it if you want, but it will start affecting your credit report. I was former AP for Target and most cases over $100 the civil demands/collections wont stop.

I mean, you don't have to pay for it, but it might fuck up your credit score. Mine was something like $150. I just paid it because $150 is worth not potentially having larger problems later on.
