Biggest lessons from getting caught

Submitted by Goblisstick in Illegalism

What is the best lesson you’ve learned from getting caught or having a very close call? For me, it’s DO NOT STAY IN A STORE FOR TOO LONG. The longer you’re in there, the greater chance you will be seen or watched.

Greed and greed.

The one and only time I ever got caught was because of greed and cockiness.

Greedy cocks is bad.

Don't have any personal experience with this but from others I know I say there are two things that will always get you caught eventually.

As /u/2SONOFHAM said is greed. And greed gets you going back to the same location, too big of a haul, hitting all the same stores for the exact same product... All of these makes it easier for someone to be alert and you end up in the wrong place wrong time.

The second way is getting too comfortable. Thinking you are top shit, your tools will make this easier, you have some crazy method with look outs, or you have done this so much you feel like you got this... All of these attitudes will consciously and subconsciously allow you to make a rookie mistake.

I know I have joked about this being a game but you always have to stay vigilant, trust your gut, always have a plan.

Are you still anxious/nervous each time ?

No, I killed emotions 20 years ago. I got really into Bushido code and following Bruce Lee's message of still like water. I stay cognizant of my surrounds but I don't really get a high, fear, or anxious when I lift. Outside of walkouts; most all of my lifts are slight of hand and those emotions would cause me to make gesture errors.

Ahh...the way of the Samurai.

I should correct that... I actually followed the philosophy from The Book of Five Rings. The author was a Ronin. Bushido is too constrained due to obligations to the Daimyo.

Same as you, don’t stay in a shop for to long and definitely no eye contact.

I understand not deeply staring in anyone’s eyes, but I feel as thought purposeful avoiding ALL eye contact might be suspicious?

Never use your credit/debit card at the same stores you lift from. Obviously NEVER do this on a trip when you are lifting (I was an idiot a few months back and this got me caught by local PD after a warrant), but it can still bust you if you ever go back to that store for legit purposes. If LP recognizes you as that one dude who lifted that one time weeks/months ago and sees you in the store again, paying with a credit card, suddenly they have your name and can pass that on to PD.

Everybody saying don't stay in the store too long, but I KNOW there were times when staying in the store for quite a while, shopping like a regular Joe before doing a walkout, has benefited me. I have some tactics that if LP were watching me, I KNOW they won't be anymore.
