There are certain rules to follow and you could probably shoplift forever, It is not statistically correct to say that eventually you will get caught. Here’s why.

Every time you shoplift, you have an equal chance of getting caught and not getting caught. Doing it a million times is NEVER going to change that equal chance.

Here is another way to explain it. Flip a coin. Are the odds of heads or tails equal? Sure. Now flip it 1 million times. Do your odds of getting either side increase over the other? Nope. That’s bc every time the possibility is caught/not caught.

That is-providing you follow the rules as much as possible. The big ones:

  1. Be white. Better yet be old and white.
  2. Respect the enemy- I can’t stress this enough. If you find yourself laughing at the LP somewhere, stop that shit. Tighten up, bc every time is like the first time, whether it’s $5 or $500.
  3. Don’t get greedy- once you get good at shoplifting you’ll almost get a feeling- the place will tell you what you can get away with. Don’t go over that.
  4. Keep walking, of course. Never stop.

Jesus this is just wrong. The odds of you flipping a coin 20 times and it hitting the same side everytime are tremendously low. You are brushing off the biggest risk of shoplifting. You only have to give ofd that one que and you are fucked. Lp can be wrong many times. Its a total numbers game in their favor.

Not only that, if LP has detected you and your pattern and are watching for you then your odds of getting caught are not independent of the last time you came in. Shoplifting has many factors outside of a casino game of chance.

Shoplifting isnt just a flip of a coin. If you're good you have much higher chances of not getting caught as opposed to someone bad at it.

Food time to fold right before you are caught. Its a numbers game. Find somewhere else to get a thrill. This isn't moralizing. Op asked for advice and the best thing for ops interests is to quit lifting and develop a legit side hustle.

It really depends on the situation of the individual.

If there's zero "need" to shoplift then stop now (or extremely soon) if you're getting tired, afraid of getting sloppy, or just don't want to push your luck too hard. Especially if you have loved ones/dependents. That "one more haul" can easily be the last one. Even a pro can have one off day - all it takes is one a*hole customer to walk by at the wrong time and nark. Gameover. If it was me, I'd get one last thing I truly want above all else that's within my skillset & comfort level and claim it as a trophy.

If there's a "need" then immediately upon meeting it. Pay off debt, rent, whatever said need is and replace the income with an actual job. Maybe just a smidge over to have an emergency savings started. Kinda where I'm at. The second I can live without feeling like I'm drowning in soul crushing debt is the second I'm done. (So $4-6kish, but part of that's supplemented by legit income of course.)

If there's zero people that depend on the person, and they just don't give a damn then never stop. Seriously, some jails are better than being free. No debt, no bills, no unnecessary junk cluttering your life, guaranteed food & shelter, etc. Especially great if you're homeless or if being homeless is a better alternative to one's current situation. Not going to lie, there was one point in my life where I would have happily stayed in jail instead of having to deal with everyday bs.

Of course if one has none depending on them, this may very well be a part of who they are for better or worse. Maybe it's a rush, maybe it's fun, maybe they just want/need stuff & thangs, etc. and that's okay whatever the reason. As long as they know the risk and fully accept the consequences then go for it as long as they want. "Whatever makes one happy so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else."

Heck, sometimes I'll lift a bunch of necessities (soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, protein bars, etc.) around Christmas and summer and donate them to those in need. Fulfills my "need" to lift and does good for the world. Whether they choose to or not Walmart/other big entity can do some good for the world. 🖕

Just my perspective.

its not a chance encounter of getting aught, but depends on many factors. lets look at some things. are you in school, and need money to live? probably steal stuff. if your Degree or career depends on a clean record, and if you job lined up, probably not a good idea to steal until you settle down in your job. -if you have children, you might need to re-evaluate your shoplifting life?

-when it comes to stealing, greed is usually the reason people get caught, because as soon as you want more after you already stolen you become very reckless and start ignoring the fact that thier are cameras, Employees, both undercover and normal security. you already see all those video heist, people try to steal thousands, but they become greedy and attempt to steal more at another store in a short amount of time, at this point they are already all over the news and cops are ready preperaing to set up stings.( the famous costco heist a few months back)

BEING charged with a misdeameanor crime is enough to scare people into giving up. -being complacent, arrogant or cocky while stealing is also a sure sign of getting caught. As alot of people in the subreddit were just that, they were caught. dont be the person that blame the forums for making them to steal, its definitely a self-made choice to steal. if your feeling stealing is becoming too much of a hassle, quit stealing then.
