My grandfather grew up in a coal miner family in Pennsylvania. He insisted that when his own father went to vote around 1900, the mine owners had armed men standing in the voting booths to make sure that the candidate the owner wanted got all of the votes. If you checked the wrong name, you were unlikely to survive the walk home.

On a similar note, the movie Selma about some parts of MLK's life has a bunch of white cops armed preventing people from entering the building where they would register to vote.

Recommended watching, along with all the cool black struggle biopics.
