I watched the movie only recently; there's so much it could have done properly, but it seemed to do the simplest way it could get away with which just about ruined it, and I couldn't force myself to enjoy it.

i feel they were more interested in turning this story into a weird character comedy-of-errors rather than an actual satire of soviet politics, which would be disrespectful enough if they didn't also get almost every personality of the presidium wrong

I was also let down. It just used the setting to tell broad jokes, without really caring about the history. Felt like an animated Disney movie's interpretation of history rather than a genuine attempt to capture a place and time and find the natural humor in it.

i mean, for example, they kept throwing around references to the doctor's plot as evidence of stalin's tyrannical or paranoid personality without mentioning that it was actually a carefully calculated anti-semitic conspiracy theory? like is that supposed to be satire? if they can't even be bothered to engage with the basic reasons why these events took place?

and milking that kind of shit for cheap laughs is incredibly offensive too.
