I doubt that it was done for any reason other than to create farmland and to obtain wood for housing. Climate change, as understood today, wasn't on the radar hundreds of years ago. The only link in the article to support the supposition is to another story on the same web site about a bird extinction. Why make up a fringe reason for settler deforestation, when the practical reality speaks for itself.
