About a decade ago I worked with a guy that looked Korean (there was a number of Koreans in the team) but his name was Russian and he was born in Kazakhstan - for a while I thought that was just normal for Kazaks.
It's staggering how few people know of this tbh. There's a similar situation with people of other ethnicities who were deported to Qazaqstan (Qirimli, Chechens, etc)
