Unfortunately, their decline (along with many others) is something I've been able to watch in real time. It was only 25 years ago I remember seeing them in relative abundance as a youngster.

It's taken a few years of actively avoiding everything that isn't grass as I mow to get milkweed in my yard. But this year I have 3 plants growing and hope it'll continue. That assumes one of the neighbors doesn't call the cops on me for a 3rd time for "tall grass" and "noxious" weeds. Fuck you City of (redacted).

My mom got harassed by garden-lot neighbors for growing "colza" when in fact she was growing mustard.

Our garden was the only one with life in it. Green and flowery and overflowing with critters and insects... And we got harassed for having mouses in the garden. Our garden was the only one with food and life and shade ofc it's a haven for animals.

Everything around it was tiny lines of small plants between bare scorched earth. Our garden was like an oasis in the desert.

Anyway they've moved and now my mom's free to grow her weed like she wants on what was an old parking lot.
