This is a local community garden setup in a manner like Habitat for Humanity. Anyone who helps in the garden can take produce from the garden. There are no income requirements or any restrictions on who can volunteer or how often they can volunteer. During harvests we may have 50-60 'volunteers' working. The normal crew is around 30 dedicated members. About 10-15 will work on Wednesday and around 20-30 of us work on Saturday mornings. Not counting food that is harvested and removed from the garden we average 6,000lbs of produce a year that is donated to a community food bank.

Among the regular volunteers we have nine master gardeners and three generational farmers. Aside from moving mulch and tilling everything else is done by hand.

The pictures do not do the garden justice. It is a full half acre (21780 square feet) of planted produce. We currently do a spring and fall planting. The entire plot is just around 3 areas. There are plans to build a couple green houses and and huge maybe doing hydroponics and aquaponics.

Sadly, this group is very much old school. They want to till the soil with every planting. They are not interested in doing cover crops. I don't even bother bringing up compost tea or vermicompost. Sure as shit not talking permaculture.

I started on the certification for master gardener but they are funded by big ag and see nothing wrong with throwing down tons of synthetic NPK.

I am working with them to learn as much as I can from the old farmers and I love serving in the community. As soon as I can find and afford my own land it will be food forests galore.

It is the largest garden I have volunteered at. A full half acre that is doubling in size next year. The produce and the benefactors are awesome! But the group is mainly focused on using big AG for fertilizer, herbicide, insecticide, and fungicide.

I read that produce was maximised at half organic and half modern methods.
