I say if you have zero experience with linux go with one of the things you listed. or if you are usimg a mor limited device like a raspberry pi it may be a good option However if you know linux even a little and tou are using a full computer I think its way more beneficial to just use the distro you like best. I just used arch. because at their core all these game based distros are usually retroarch (with emulation station slapped on top) running in an altered debian.

the reason I do it this way is 1. if I want to use the computer differently I aint locked inside retroarch with only a small handful of installable programs I get to use everything a normal distro can 2. I hate emulatuon station it just multilies the set up complexity just give me vanilla retroarch. 3. some times these things assume that all config will be done with a controller which means navigating absurd amount of menus what a pita. just let me plug in my mouse and keyboard and config things normally.

My set up actually uses kodi and an amazing plugin called internet archivw game library to run retro arch. I then also stream stuff with kodi plugins too. and launch steam from kodi as well. its a good set up.

edit: case in point I dont think youd be able to run a web browser in either which is more useful than you might think on a living room PC

its been a long time since I used something like batocera but I can let you know my opinion/what I do now if you are interested.

:edit: I guess it matters a little what your final vision is. Like is this going to be siting on a computer in your living room or what you are doing with it.

I don't know yet, I saw PS3 and WiiU games running on emulator which I never thought was possible with current hardware. But my Idea is probably set a a desktop PC that can be upgraded (?). Not sure, it's more like a daydream, I am broke lol

i played breath of the wild this way. it was laggy as hell though. this was a few years ago though so maybe things have improved. but the ps3 /wiiu emulation wasnt anything special a lot of games didnt work and most were just fast enough to be playable which is to say rather laggy.

edit: I guess 2 yrs actually and I had a decent cpu the specs required to not lag were ridiculous iirc.

if you set your expectations lower (like older systems) you can probably pull this off with a raspberry pi which are relatively cheap (though not free obvi)

I just use Whonix/Qubes IceCat TBB. Anything else is futile.
