Good stuff, particularly the points on simplicity, efficiency and progress.

Somewhat related: A former steam-friend of mine turned 'white nationalist' and I always felt that Crusader Kings II had something to do with it.

Paradox games in general have really awful fanbases. Which I guess isn't surprising given the uh... unfortunate ideological baggage behind how pretty much everything in those games works

I can't view r/hoi4 for the reason that majority of posts there are "Rate my Reich with a modded swastika flag" shit.

I do enjoy Paradox games, though.

Edit: also, I remember recent outrage on Paradox forums for devs making female portraits for advisers not optional in Europa Universalis 4. Thing to note: those protesting about it was clearly a minority.

Oooh, the connection is much more obvious than I thought! (edit: as in, I didn't realize that's from the game)

Nah, as playing a FPS game can't make you a sort of a school-shooter, the same way a game about crusades era can't make you a white supremacist. However, some specific aspects of a game can attract specific auditory, for sure.

So, I'm certain that other way around - not CKII turned someone into 'white nationalist', but crypto-'white nationalist' was attracted to a game about rewriting history.
