"Humane" has a long story of being used in the context of alleviating suffering, human or not. The Royal Humane Society was founded i 1774.

I'm not saying that the word choice debate isn't to be had, but just that using "humane" in this context is pretty common.

Not trying to debate or argue the common usage. Just trying to address the humanist aspect in this context being unnecessary so why not use an equally appropriate word without the baggage.
