I'm not so sure recognizing the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, or ISIS (three most major resistance groups) as legitimate parts of Afghanistan is the best answer, despite the faux peace it would bring.

It would end strictly defined 'civil war' but their oppression, presumably, would be just as bad as any such case.

It's a total mess, similar to the situation of Iraq after the US invasion. Afghans opposed to the Taliban have to delegitimize them in the eyes of the people for things to get better and the intervention of the West doesn't help at all on this. Hope that Afghans have the strength to overcome these obstacles.

Yeah, that's my stance as well, but the advocating for the West to specifically try to legitimize them before pulling out doesn't seem like a good move either.
