Not mind numbing enough they need to remove all thought? I'm convinced this is why we have shortened attention spans. It isn't phones. It's increasingly mindless work.

Yeah, the phones thing has always come across to me as a convenient way to forward generational discrimination by older generations who are less inclined to use new tech. I've had mind-numbingly boring and repetitive work before, and I found other ways of acting out my boredom without having a smart phone. Also, saying "it's the gizmos" is more useful for liberals than saying that maybe the system is at fault.
