Yeah, the phones thing has always come across to me as a convenient way to forward generational discrimination by older generations who are less inclined to use new tech. I've had mind-numbingly boring and repetitive work before, and I found other ways of acting out my boredom without having a smart phone. Also, saying "it's the gizmos" is more useful for liberals than saying that maybe the system is at fault.
