Although I'd disagree with that last part. There are lots of gameplay mods that add extra animations such as: DooM shotgun reloading, imp headshot death, and if you try to use that with Freedoom, you'll get serpentipedes turning into headshotted imps, that neat looking Freedoom shotgun briefly turning into a reloading DooM shotgun, things like that. But I posted a solution to that here.

Freed∞m always has new stuff every version, so each playthrough has some new and interesting levels, etc. Besides, all wads that work with Doom are fine on Freed∞m.
