To start, find a stick which branches out in two directions. Now, take one of these branches and cut the other two from the point of branching; the remaining branch will marginally appear to be bent to an acute angle at the end. You may now shave off the extra wood at this bend until it appears to have the top of a traditional crochet hook. Now, carve out the area underneath it, where the acute angle mentioned earlier should be until it is at the desired size. If you want, you can sand it.

Be aware of the size of hook you would like as well as the tools you have while you pick the stick— some woods may be better than others in certain conditions.

The heart of the idea, though, is simply to use a branched stick.
