Cybernetics can be understood as a trans-disciplinary discourse which articulates common threads between all complex systems (whether they are neurological, biological, mechanical, psychological, organisational, ecological, computational, social, etc).

You could have just said it was the science of control

I didn't describe it as the science of control for a few reasons. For me, cybernetics is about selfcontrol (and is equally about communication) and for a lot of people the notion of control, especially a science of it, is a scary and unattractive idea. Second, I describe it as a discourse and not as a science because I do not consider myself a scientist and think there are many aspects of cybernetics that are not simply scientific, and I think many of those aspects are the most interesting and potentially fruitful for the left.
