My rc.conf has a syntax error and vi can’t open it because the file system is mounted read only.

mount -uw /

If that fails,

mount -ur /
fsck -f /
mount -uw /

Do whatever you can to avoid force-mounting.

Learned lesson. Do not edit system files while brain is in /inebriated directory. Most days I’m a functioning alcoholic, but some days I’m very nonfunctional.
