It's more just practicality for moderation. It takes a lot of work to check for every derogatory term if it's used by someone who is using it in an okay way

And even more importantly spam and bigoted trolls are heavily discouraged by a slur filter.

I find it annoying too but it is way better than constantly having to delete comments and having Nazis spam slurs on the front page.
