I want a practice space now that I am finally playing guitar again. In fact its becoming a neccesity at this point. I could do a corner of my living room but of course that is how my music and guitar get drawn on (one of the perks of children everything gets covered in marker eventually). So that leaves two rooms really my bedroom and my closet. Now the closet would take extensive organization and then maybe it would be suitable. But the eventual plan (that we need to do soon.) is to move my youngest out of the bassinet and then we would put the crib up in the bedroom and then move the dresser into the closest so as soon as I got it set up I would lose the space.

Which leaves the bedroom. Which as it is doesn't have a good layout though hypothetically there is enough space. Really all it takes is to decenter the bed and push the thing into a corner. So i would be sleeping immediately adjacent to a wall. Which I am willing to do. Seems like a winner but of course my wife "hates that idea" 🙄. Apparently she will lose the ability to make the bed (I don't even understand why people make beds in the first place) and will lose access to an outlet that only I really use. and she won't like the way it looks. Which honestly makes me irrationally angry but thats another post.

So her brilliant idea is that I set up the stair landing as my practice space. You know in the direct flow of traffic. and then I just ask my kid really really nicely not to mess with my stuff. 🙄.

If it was up to me we would ditch the bed and all sleep in one room on futons like I've seen the Japanese do. It just seems so economical space wise.

move your bed into the living room that way you'll have a ton of space to put your music stand!

Alternatively get a large slab of wood and place it on top of the bed. Now not only do I have a place for my chair and stand but I also have a stage.

For real though I could do that if she would go for the futons.

Sometimes I daydream about getting a giant dumpster and just throwing away everyone else's stuff. My dad does this to my mom, sneaks around and throws her shit away. As a kid I thought it was kind of villainous and wrong. Now I am beginning to think he was on to something.

Even in places that I’ve lived where there is adequate space to set up music equipment, that stuff can admittedly get quite messy, cables pedals, amps, drums, instruments, And I can get self conscious when my roommates hear me playing, like when you sing in the shower, and have your partner comment on it, I like to feel free to be exploratory when I play music, so despite being a pretty proficient musician in bc want to be able to focus on very specific things that are often quite discordant, I’m sure no one wants to hear rudiments and scales for an hour each day. If your city has music rehearsal lockouts I might recommend looking into it, if you have a few friends who are also interested in music it can make sense to share the cost of renting one, as much as it was an additional expense it also cleared up space in my house, helped avoid conflict in my relationship, gave me a space to try out some very loud things, and was often a very underutilizes space by the other renters… I think I may have saved some money in a sense since I was able to be comfortable in a much smaller apartment, and keep my big speaker cabinets and stuff in a building with a grandfathered lease in the middle of an industrial area. So cheap rent, was also interesting chatting with some of the characters who stopped by.
