I've been juggling between lobste.rs & 'postmill'. I've spoken with Peter from lobste.rs and had a recent conversation with 'allcatsarebeautiful' in her Riot.im instance.
She was the one that told me directly to make a post on this site asking for assistance with deploying an instance.
I am not very technically inclined, but I have an extensive research team that heavily believes in the libre movement. I have the knowledge & research to help usher blockchain into a new era that will actually deploy the technology in a helpful way that doesn't just involve price speculation.
To be clear:
A) I am not invested in Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency or blockchain project
B) I am not a part of any 'commercial' organization of any sort & have zero agenda
C) I have not and have no plans to launch an 'IEO' / 'ICO' or a token of any sort
D) I have spent the vast majority of the last few years of my life dedicated to generating free content to help individuals learn about the blockchain space, cryptography, OSINT, opsec, deepweb (in a non-glorifying, gimmicky way), and helping to provide tools, assistance and resources to allow folks to ensure that they retain their access to knowledge and methods of securitization
This Instance Falls in Line With Raddle's Principles
I don't know too much about the birth of this instance, but I do know that it started with Reddit's radical censorship and removal of a subreddit that should not have been removed.
I respect what has been done here and I believe that it is a huge step in the right direction. Self-hosting + exploring federated instances where censorship becomes much more difficult is the most intuitive thing to do moving forward.
Blockchain Can Help Get Us Where We Need to Be
If you're familiar with Bitcoin/blockchain, you've probably been fed the bullshit promises by one project or another claiming they are going to 'democratize access' to something, 'disrupt' some industry, or 'revolutionize' some longstanding industry like television or the internet.
Usually these claims are followed up by:
A) The promotion of some specific cryptocurrency
B) The promotion of some service
99.9% of these claims are bogus and purposefully grandiose for the sake of drawing investment.
However, that does not mean blockchain is bogus. In fact, its quite the opposite & I think its needed.
We Still Aren't Protected
Ultimately, raddle.me must rely on a registrar of some sort and that registrar takes orders from whoever controls the (.me) gTLD.
If, for whatever reason, the United States or some other government entity decides they really don't like this community, it would be a trivial matter to have raddle(.)me kicked off of this domain. Most DNS root zones are in the U.S. as well.
Even the Tor Network is a fragile proposal - and do you want to be forced to settle for that? I respect what Opennic does, but their TLDs not being accepted by default configurations really makes gaining adoption/steam difficult and it allows large companies to effectively dominate.
Look at what's happened to Sci Hub. Their mission is absolutely beautiful. They just want to provide open access to academic research. That's it!
And Elsevier has essentially forced them to the outskirts of the internet and demonized Sci Hub's founder - Alexandra Elbakyan ; a brave woman that is honestly an inspiration for me and hopefully many others.
If they can do that to someone whose sole goal is to unpaywall things like cancer research, disease prevention, and other scholarly pursuits that are designed to help advance civilization itself, what do you think they'll do to a Raddle(.)me if this becomes enough of a threat?
And yes, you are a threat. Anyone that's 'woke' and realizes the game that's being played is a fucking threat.
That doesn't mean panic, but it does mean remain aware.
Your Storage isn't Protected
You may be able to hide from the gov't or whoever else - but ultimately, your cloud storage is out of your control for the most part.
Perhaps you use a VPS that's in a jursidiction outside of the Fourteen Eyes and they have sworn on their children's lives they will never give you up & your encryption methods are second to none.
But what if a war breaks out and a drone strike blows up their facility by accident? What if a rogue employee or an employee's deranged ex-wife comes in and starts breaking bare-metal servers left & right?
What if a vicious stuxnet-level virus compromises the entire setup?
Your stuff is gone.
"Okay, But I Can Use Things Like TOR!"
Tor is nearing its theoretical limits and that's led to a lot of service disruptions (https://www.securityweek.com/attacking-tor-what-it-takes-disrupt-popular-onion-routing-network).
"What About Torrent?"
Torrent works great when it comes to accessing files and content that *many people are interested in but its weakness is that it isn't really built for personal storage.
Your yearbook photos are something that perhaps only you care about.
That doesn't make it less important, but it does create a situation where there is no reason to realistically expect other nodes to host / store the content on your behalf for the sake of it.
Maybe this will work in the 'nascent phase' of whatever deployment / software you launch, but banking on altruism has never been a sustainable business model.
Okay Asshole, What's the Solution Then?
Blockchain presents a lot of viable solutions.
A) Monero DNS (we already have Namecoin up and running)
B) A reliable, cryptographic means of proving identity in a way that gets rid of a serious attack vector inherent in GPG / PGP keys
C) Better website certificate verification (blockchain would be awesome for this given its chronological nature)
D) Facilitation of a distributed, file sharing architecture that finally addresses the dilemma posed above as it pertains to, 'How do I get node X to give a fuck about the honeymoon photos of node Y? And, more importantly, how do I entrust node X with the responsibility of holding all or some of that file without being able to spy on it while also having the acute knowledge of how to deliver this content to me upon my request?'
Do I have the answers / solutions yet? Hell no. That's why I'm asking for a Raddle(.)me
How Will a Raddle Instance Help?
Glad you asked.
A raddle instance will allow me to disseminate information I have spent years aggregating (literally, years).
One of the main reasons why these solutions I am talking about have not been truly explored or deployed is because the space is still inundated / poisoned with people that are only looking to make a 'quick buck'.
Rather than focusing their efforts on developing open-source solutions that expand and extend the already existing architecture of blockchain projects in existence (i.e., Bitcoin/Litecoin/Ethereum), they would rather 'create their own', often with the sole intent of just milking money from others.
I've spent a lot of time lamenting this, complaining about it & trying to spread awareness - and now I'm choosing to do something about it.
With this instance, I can ensure that helpful, substantive information gets out.
Also, to be clear, this is not my only deployment.
I have (actively and in tow):
Numerous websites (blogs, documentation, etc.)
Routed information from all over the space for every facet of the space piped into Slack (which is then piped into Rocket.chat because I'm not paying $12/user)
Over 600 reports /article I have written and published in the public domain (one source = blog.hash.fail)
Yes, I can handle it all - but I am also looking to get community involved. I don't want to be at the forefront or a dictator.
I have to be the driving force right now because no one else 'believes' in this yet. But I am committed. I have posted over 1 million words in my Telegram ANN channel (yes, I downloaded the html documents & counted). That's the equivalent of every single Harry Potter book released by J.K. Rowling (according to Google).
And I did not charge for one single word.
I have zero sponsors, VCs, investments, or conflicts of interest. I am beholden to no one, nothing and no narrative.
So, if there's any question about my legitimacy, passion or dedication - I hope that answers it.
If there's anyone willing to put their resources to a great purpose and assist me with getting a raddle instance up & running so that I can help facilitate the growth of blockchain the right way (a true return to dev-first, selfless cypherpunk principles) and expanding our potential avenues of gaining real freedom in this world, please reply and let me know what your services entail and what I need to pay in order to get an instance up.
I'm not asking for charity or for anyone to freeload. Just looking for expertise for a genuine service to make the world a better place.
