Lifted a few wool baselayers. Later in the day I realized these are $75 for short sleeve, $80 for long sleeve, and $110 for the thicker long sleeves!

I understand that merino wool is a quality wool. The fabric was stitched well. Am I just out of touch with what 'brand name' camping and hiking gear costs? Is Smartwool a premium brand?

The Patagonia and NorthFace hoodies were less expensive than any of the Smartwool items.

Probably because synthetics have replaced wool in mass production and now wool is a niche item for yuppies.
