Had a thought posting it on a response to the latest tankie invasion, something like "This is what real MEN look like". But then, a doubt beset me. I wasn't sure, but I thought that this picture might be homophobic. What your thoughts are, Raddle?

Yeah. Let's be real, the joke here is that Hitler and Stalin are gay.

Yeah it's homophobic. Just like the signs that some have recently made showing Trump & Putin hugging and kissing.

The idea, supposedly, is to undermine the macho bravado attitude of these dictator types, by showing them in effeminate or homosexual poses, because according to (current) patriarchal logic those things are not "manly." So yes, this style of political commentary follows from patriarchal and homophobic logic.

Sure is. Maybe if there weren't so many homophobic tankies people I would think otherwise.

I don't think the image is homophobic, but your framing of it is a bit of a problem.

framing of it

The problem is there are plenty of people who use homophobic slurs against their enemies because they're homophobic. I don't think the 'framing,' on OP's part is the problem as much as it is about self-awareness.

I think the point of the image is just that he's marrying the most hated historical figure. It's a cutesy hetero-normative image that I think has the exact same effect if you replaced Stalin with a woman that allied with the Nazis. I'd almost say there's nothing gay about the image at all. Using marriage as a metaphor for political alliance in a comic is a regular trope.

How often do you really see this? You can say it's about marriage while ignoring the blatant homophobia that is literally everywhere.

I wonder when this comic was written and then upon seeing that take notice of the culture at that time and I bet homophobia played a vital role in its creation.

regular trope

Almost like homophobia.

Eh I disagree. I have no idea if it would have been considered homophobic at the time, maybe it was, but I don't see it that way at all now.

I think on its own not necessarily, but it can easily be used that way with the smallest reframing.

It's a suprisingly and weirdly wholesome looking picture.

I think it is not because he is happy.

Yes, and it’s also not historically accurate.

Not arguing, but out of curiosity: why it isn't historically accurate? Assuming, historically, Hitler didn't married Stalin.
