As u/alex had experienced being the supposedly penitent repeat offender, I have also been there. There were times when my friends had simply said that they understand my apology, but that they couldn't trust me anymore. This is an appropriate response, even though I had been genuinely apologetic about the changes I would make for myself. I couldn't possibly be entitled to any more chances than people are willing to give (especially if it's more than 3 or 4 times), and out of having a desire to be accountable, I couldn't blame them for not trusting me any longer. They eventually did trust me again, but I am willing to respect whatever decision they made ultimately. We are both happy that I could be trusted again, and I was far more attentive to the changes I needed to make. The harsh lesson made it pretty clear that I can't just fuck around with people's trust like that, even if it's a habit and difficult for me to change; and that change needs to be taken seriously as a permanent thing, or there is no integrity for the respect I claim to have post-apology.
