I don't even understand why people feel the need to judge historical figures. They lived, they died, move on. Don't brand yourself with some dead asshole's name.

Eh. "fair" isn't really a standard to live by. In my mindset, if John Brown and others like him were able to exist in his time, then I can't really excuse the existence of slaveowners. Contemporary standards aren't all that great either when you consider what shaped them, so I don't really use those as a sort of moral pinnacle to compare people of the past to.

I don’t think we should judge them. We should learn from their decisions based on the context of that time period. And use that analysis to better our lives. There is nothing to gain by judging them other than an academic exercise.

Every time I've heard someone say it's unfair to judge historial figures by modern standards, it's always assholes like slave owners or committers of genocide. They had no lack of contemporary critics, and the framing of their actions as "okay back then" is historical revisionism.
