I think it starts with the fact that statists tend to be fine with prisons existing in the first place.

But the prison space gets mystified as 'other' and so the dehumanisation of the people living in it becomes 'just the way it is'.

I'm sure that people have protested movies and studios before. Depends where you are and what your resources are.

to add on to it, a lot of the ideas of "criminals are subhuman" is just ingrained in american culture. makes sense that movies get passes for it
