Apply to small(er) businesses instead of giant corporations. Every giant corporation is shitty, whereas some small businesses are not that shitty. Also, the public sector is usually ethically better than the private sector (with the massive exception of the military and police, but you already knew that).

If their building is accessible to the public, go inside and strike up a conversation with one of the workers. Ask them what it's like to work there, and ask them what your starting pay will be (if you're talking about blue-collar jobs). This will save you a lot of time, since you can weed out companies that will treat you like shit or not pay you enough.

Also, I personally would rule out working for any company in the following industries: petroleum, finance, meat/dairy, real estate, insurance, security, software-as-a-service, military, police, or anybody who sells things primarily to the military or police, to name a few.

Look into how previous employees left (fired or quit, and why) Do they employ people as "independent contractors" who should probably be full employees? Any unpaid internships? Pay gap?

TBH seems like maybe a construction company is the only thing I can go into around me. That or research at a university
