My mother-in-law has farm cats that receive essentially no care except for being fed (none of them are spayed or neutured which is always great for the bird population) A mother cat was run over leaving her 5 or 6 week old kittens orphaned. There's other cats that are a few months old but none are mothers. I'm afraid they'll likely die if I don't take them in. Shelters seem like a less then ideal situation as they're all kill shelters. I get mother nature is sometimes cruel but domesticated animals are sort of our responsibility as we made them domesticated. Any opinions on this? Probably isn't some universal moral truth on this issue but would like some opinions.

I'd say since we're more intelligent, we have the moral obligation to help animals whenever we can, by any means we can. Humans shouldn't treat animals the way they do. We have the capacity to be better, and it disgusts me that we aren't.

How exactly are we more intelligent? Destroying the whole planet and killing all other animals on it doesn't seem really intelligent to me..

Funny thing, human scientists rate humans more intelligent than all other animals, but guess what species created the construct known as intelligence? And scientists? And species? And the animal/human division?

If you take them in temporarily and try find homes for them that might be a solution

I had my wife bring them home. There's a no kill shelter a half hour away. Going to call on Monday to see if they'll take them. I'll probably have to wait til next weekend to go but they're safe on my 3 season porch (need to keep my cat safe just in case they're sick) with food, a litter box and water. Much better off than they were.

Main issue with free-range cats is that, being completely blunt, they are psychotic murder machines. Yes, they are cute and you probably want to cuddle them (I know this firsthand, having lived with a cat for twelve years). On the other hand, if you simultaneously take care of a cat and allow them to go outside, you are directly facilitating the sort of spree killings that would make the bloodiest of serial killers jealous.

So, you've got to consider knock-on effects with this sort of thing.

I agree cats shouldn't be outside for that exact reason. They're decimating native animals all over the world.

I had my wife bring them home. Probably going to bring them to a no kill shelter half hour away. They spay and neuter so even if someone takes it and allows it outside they won't at least have offspring.
