Also they changed the garbage collector to a faster generational GC so it might be faster now.

My understanding is that VirtualBox for Windows hosts requires proprietary compilers, but you can build the open source edition (GPLv2 license) of VirtualBox on Linux with free-as-in-freedom tools. https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux%20build%20instructions
