From activist circles. I can't stand being with someone that believes even slightly in the state anymore.

I know how it feels. Especially if you live in a small town, you're probably the only one who hates authority there. Haha.

in my experience most small town people hate authority... but they also hate 'minorities' and fun

Maybe it's just a slight tendency to be less submissive. Maybe it's because those who live in small towns don't feel like they need authority as much as the ones from metropolitan areas. There are less malls and theaters and all those "fun" things from big cities, so the people find other ways to have fun that doesn't require giving money to some huge company. The kids still play in the street with each other like when I was a kid, but with the smartphone thing, this is also starting to disappear.

i think the men in small towns tend to view themselves as the authority, not to feel like they don't need authority

In a graduate school seminar we both hated being taught by a colonial apologist cum bigot of everyone with brown skin. Used to meet over coffee to discuss how best to frame our research papers to expose his own stupidity.
