So I've never used Reddit...

What's a 'funny/ depressing/ weird anecdote' from your reddit experience that might give me a bit of an insight into reddit's culture?

as someone who didn't come out of that world, i'm curious as to what reddit was like for you all

also, nothing is too petty or weird or whatever... give me some drama!

I followed shills for the Monsanto corporation around and exposed them whenever they'd attack anyone that talked ill of Monsanto. I then got invited to a secret sub for members of the 'organic industry' and realized there were 2 separate sets of shills, organic-bigag and regular-bigag, but the Monsanto shills were way better funded and far more malicious. The two sides were getting paid to wage war with each other and it creeped me the fuck out. They all just assumed I was on the payroll like them.

mofongo wrote

Did you request a payroll?

ziq wrote

No, I don't care about the organic industry. Especially since they are able to still use toxic pesticides somehow.

Arguing with anarchists who have a particular disdain for age of consent laws about how maybe adults shouldn't be fucking teenagers.

Getting stalked/harrassed/suicide goaded and called a batshit crazy tranny among other things by an entire fash shithole subreddit for months only to have admins tell me "Yeah they're doing nothing wrong why not just ignore them", also so-called anarchist comrades working in collusion with those folks to further their harassment campaigns.

Needing to explain to cishet brocialists in anarchist court why misgendering people should be an action which has consequences.

Trans user being told "Did you just assume my gender!" by a cis dude by saying "dude" and threatened with sanctions in anarchist court over it. Anarchist court sides with cis dude.

Brocialist freezepeacher passing a law in anarchist court making it technically illegal to tell fash to kill themselves (or anyone else for that matter), and getting them banned by pointing out the hypocrisy of their die-hard freezepeachness including their defending people's right to use racial, misogynist, and queerphobic slurs, but they are somehow against KYS.

But it was a dude. His post history was filled with him saying "I'm a guy", "I'm a straight guy", etc. He didn't even deny he was a guy after he made the "did you just assume my gender??" remark.

I think the user was Potss if I remember correctly, unless Enk is talking about another incident.

I was a mod at the time and removed that person from meta Anarchist Court because they were abusing and belittling a neurodivergent comrade who came back after flouncing for mental health reasons a while back. That's when hamjam decided to make a big fuss about it and fight for their rights to be an abusive transphobic asshole (The "Did you just assume my gender" thing is a popular transphobic joke).

4

BlackFlagged wrote

juam actually did a very similar thing, accused me of being 'sexist' for calling him bro, tried to insinuate I was misgendering him without outright saying it. Meanwhile, his post history was filled with him talking about what a 'good father' he is to his kids and repeatedly identifying as male.

5

Enkara wrote (edited )

It's pretty icky... the only way to attack it is head-on but then you get people all affronted like "How DARE you ask me my pronouns or am I cis or trans!?"

3

goof_goat wrote

wow so is anarchist court just filled with abusive transphobes now?

3

ziq wrote (edited )

Abusers and the bureaucrats that enable them. I learned a lot from that toxic environment re: how raddle should be structured to avoid all those pitfalls.

I am a masculine jar of mayonnaise so it's possible I miss a lot of subtle garbage, anyway I'll try to give you a little insight.

First of all it's not as bad as a YouTube comment sections, downvoting kinda works unlike YouTube dislikes. This means that unlike Facebook and YouTube comments you can have little happy islands where normally people don't behave like assholes. Even there there are a lot of brocialists, moslty in favour of class reductionism and whining about identity politics.

Most people would say that Reddit has never been as bad as it is today. It is true, however it was hardly much better in the past. If I have to describe the history of Reddit with few words, I'd say you should know about this chronological order of shitshows:

  1. /r/jailbait a subreddit dedicated to proliferating material for pedophiles, it was shut down as soon as it was found by the admins. Ahahah just kidding, it was shut down only after the lefties told the press about that place. bad subreddit --> bad press --> admins ban subreddit, that's how it works

  2. GamerGate created a literal schism among subreddits because gamers couldn't accept women in their toxic safe spaces. To this day /r/KotakuInAction still exists, it just evolved into a fascist shithole.

  3. TheFappening happened on Reddit. It took the admins like one day to cleanse their website from all the leaked images while users were busy arguing that celebs shouldn't keep private sensitive pictures on their mobile phones if they didn't want them to be stolen. The admins claimed that it took them one day to start banning users and subreddits involved because they had to keep the website stable because the influx was too high, yes they preferred to keep the ads and the server stable instead of nuking the server room.

  4. /r/fatpeoplehate a subreddit dedicated to making fun of fat people with the guise of giving them the motivation to lose weight, they also committed to targeted abuse of users and that lead to a ban. After the ban no one heard from them again... pfff jokes on you comrade! they kept spamming the front page for days after the ban, polluting it with their filfth and attacks towards the CEO of Reddit (then a woman)

  5. The insecure males of Reddit used the firing of a Reddit employee as a scapegoat to attack and force the resignation of that same woman CEO. A hundred of major subreddits went private for a day while the front page was full of gendered and racial insults towards this asian woman (a bourgeoise, yes, but it shows the true colours of the community)

  6. Slowly the fascists began infiltrating every subreddit. The major fascist subreddits at that time were banned, but it was too late because fascists found a perfect soil for their seeds of hatred. So while /r/coontown was banned, we were left to live with the fine gentlement of /r/european. Now you ask, why name it "/r/European" and not "/r/Europe"? Because there was already a sub named /r/Europe. Can you guess why those kind gentlemen needed their own place to discuss about the impending invasion of Europe? Even that subreddit was soft-banned after a reeeeeally long time and after infecting /r/Europe, too little too late.

  7. The_Donald. Until now overtly fascist subreddits were small, they were hardly never featured on the front page. T_D changed everything. We have no idea how it started, maybe it was made as a joke, but I'm sure about two things. One: it surged to the top in no time thanks to bots, astroturfers and really dedicated users. Two: it generated major drama at least ONCE per month, more episodes of drama than the splits of a trot party. Ever heard of Pizzagate? Thanks to T_D a man showed up with a rifle trying to save non-existant kids from the basement of a random restaurant run by imaginary jewish/democrats/communists/liberals involved in a made up pedophile group. I can't stress out how much shit that sub has accomplished. Maybe it isn't as bad as /r/nazi or /r/Physical_Removal (helicopter and Pinochet "jokes") regarding quality, it certainly is regarding sheer numbers. I fear more a mainstream fascist subreddit than a hardcore one with not even 1/100 the subs of the former.

I've tried to give you an insight on drama, big time drama of the past. Hope it was worth the time to write.

6

mofongo wrote

Regarding 4, fatpeoplehate were only banned because they targeted the imgur admins which pressure the Reddit admins to act.

Also, all of the banned subs mentioned have alternate subreddits still open.

For years I never checked replies on Reddit, because I was tired of being overwhelmed by the misogyny. I wasn't even posting anything radical for the vast majority of my use, and the backlash for merely admitting that you're a woman in some subs would just plaster you with messages. It was tiring. Explaining the toxicity of relationship subs would be a whole long post, too. (I point those out specifically, because it's where a massive amount of toxic gender roles are perpetuated on the site.) Reddit is full of perpetuating racist myths, misogyny, and pseudoscience. Then when I started correcting bullshit, I would cycle through accounts to avoid doxxing attempts. It was exhausting.

Basically, being a woman (or queer, or trans, or black, or [insert anyone not a cis white male engineer in his 20s from Silicon Valley]) on Reddit is psychologically horrendous over time.

What finally killed it for good for me, though, is the effect of Reddit marketing on opinion. I've had people close to me, Reddit users, repeat white supremacist and anti-feminist talking points in real life. Where did they get that information? "Well, that's how people feel." People naturally drift towards what they believe is the majority opinion. We're social animals. This is the basis for online marketing, and it's extremely effective. So then add into that white supremacist groups gaming reddit's voting system, buying upvotes, and flooding the frontpage with bots, and do you see the problem, yet?

[Edit to add: And I don't buy or care for Reddit/Facebook/Google making weak arguments that they're "fixing" things, because it's actually not a problem for them. Nazis making bots is bad for PR, but if it makes them $100,000 or a million, who cares? I've seen some bot detectors come out of academia and some associated corporate engineers with a conscious, but ffs it's too late. The damage has been done. Nazism is now legitimate again in the eyes of a significant amount of Western populations. Trump has a direct Twitter line to his zealots. Damage. Done.]

The worst part is that people don't realize, or will admit to, it happening. It was a cold realization to have sudden clarity about how Reddit was molding my own opinions, thoughts, and feelings about myself. I had a similar realization about 4chan back in my misspent youth (a significant amount of self-hatred stemmed from that cesspool), so I was willing to self-examine. Reddit is far more terrifying in this aspect, because it is one of the highest trafficked websites in the world now.

I'd rather hide out here, even though it's a self-segregated community, than be consistently exposed to that. The internet is being curated and segmented now by only a small handful of companies that are trying to control what we view and click on, so I might as well click on a site that seems safer.

The first time I saw a coworker (old white man) using reddit at work I caught a glimpse of his username and stalked it for a bit, all the shitty rapey misogynist and transphobic jokes and reddit bro bullshit he said IRL suddenly made sense once I found out he was a redditor.

But yeah I agree with you, the major social media sites are far more harm than good and the world would be better off without them.

i feel like there's a panic over 4chan & 8chan in certain sectors of the media related to like angela nagle's kill all normies that completely misses reddit

3

squirrels wrote

Agreed. They'll happily exploit fear-mongering over 4chan & 8chan, but reddit barely gets a mention here or there. I think it's also harder for them to stir up fear or to pin it down for what it is, because there are subs for everything. People will just point to the happy, fluffy subs and the company itself will exploit the image that the company crafted back in the Aaron Swartz days of being the cool, new, progressive internet "community," while entirely missing that the fascist subs are among the most active.

Getting my account suspended for 'doxxing' for pointing out that some troll was lying about not being American when he repeatedly said in his post history what US state he was from.

Prince_Kropotkin convincing an entire sub of reactionaries (r/drama) to doxx, stalk and harass anarchists, trans folk and anyone else he considers 'edgy'. And now seeing the mods of r/completeanarchy and r/chapotraphouse letting him use their subs for his harassment campaigns too.

ravencrowed and Prince_Kropotkin posing as anarchists while constantly defending cops, saying they're just working class blokes and no different than walmart cashiers.

burtzev refusing to stop misgendering someone, and then starts calling them 'it' when threatened with a ban. Still doesn't get banned for another year.

edit:

rebelsdarklaughter calling people 'ageist' for saying having sex with kids is wrong. Then agreeing with someone that 'there's nothing wrong with man-boy-love'. Everyone refuses to ban him because 'it's just a misunderstanding'. Then PK mods him on his sub and they do a podcast together where PK defends his pedo comments.

Hahaha remember when (I think burtzev) said that when he was calling them "it" they were just doing regular old dehumanization... like they call cishet people "it" all the time supposedly and it has nothing to do with gender (yeah right), therefore it wasn't transphobia? Despite no where them using "it" as an insult on cis people.

7

Defasher wrote (edited )

burt:

"It", by the way is, of course, meant as an insult. You should be an expert on insults by now. It is neither masculine or feminine. In English it carries the connotation of 'inanimate', not even approaching the level of a toadstool or other noxious living thing. Besides, how do you know what gender Stinky is ? I think it should be apparent by now that nobody should take ANY of Stinky's manufactured persona as truth.

I'm getting barfing flashbacks.

I've been on reddit for years, though I would never identify myself as a redditor... so that should tell you something. Overall, I'd say it's hit or miss for me. The default subs are a cesspool and there's waaaay too many bots and shills, but that's every large platform on the internet. Each sub has a different personality, and some of the smaller ones are alright to kill time in.

But there's this... particular subset of users you run into. They're argumentative, spiteful, and usually misogynistic, and they randomly crawl out from under their rock to shit on your day. Like they go out of their way to be hateful garbage.

Oh and the CEO seems cool with giving a platform for fascists to speak, so there's that.

Just remembered another one. An 'anarchist' who defended the US military because "it really improved my life after I joined up".

Then he attacked me for saying that Mussolini deserved to be executed. He spent the better part of an hour insisting that Mussolini could have been removed from power peacefully and shouldn't have been killed and I wasn't an anarchist for supporting his 'murder'. This all coming from someone that was enlisted in the US military during the (2nd) Iraq war and made no apologies for it.

arms_room_rat was his name.

Serious question: what is wrong with pedophiles? I can definitelly understand being opposed to actually acting on pedophilic desires, of course, as it would probably end up being rape, but as someone who has empathy even to my worst enemies, I don't see why everyone is so against the attraction itself. It's fine if an adult is attracted to someone who isn't attracted to them, right, provided that no rape is involved? So why is it not the same for pedophiles? Am I too young to understand or something?? Because this question has beem bugging me for quite a while.

5

mofongo wrote

It's not something that would, it's something that will.

In my case, it's a very personal reason, overall it's a multitude of factors. The first being protect children from harm and those that would harm them. It's impossible to know who is just waiting for the opportunity to satisfy their desires and its very idealistic to expect for everyone to have full control of their urges. In many cases of child abuse that I have read and heard, the opportunity to be alone with a child was all that was needed, be it a child under their care, younger family members, their own children. With few cash, you can go to any third world country and pay cheaply for a child prostitute (over there was a woman that was prostituting her daughters, both under 5, for less than a dollar).

Back to the subject, normalizing pedophilia because is not abuse opens the door to circumstances like "it's ok to leave children with this person, they're a pedophile not an abuser" which will put children at risk as explained above.

The second part is that desire to satisfy this urges lead to the creation of child pornography, drawn or otherwise. I don't think it's necessary to expand upon this.

The third part is that pedophile should receive psychological assistance in order to help them better resist their urges and to not put themselves in situations where they could succumb to them.
